Guide · Shopify in South Africa
What it actually costs in rand, which payment gateways work here, where local stores go wrong — and how to decide between Shopify and WooCommerce. Written by a studio that builds these for a living.
Yes — completely. South African businesses run Shopify stores selling in rand, shipping with local couriers, taking payment through local gateways. There's one significant catch worth knowing before you start: Shopify Payments — Shopify's own built-in checkout — is not available in South Africa. You use a third-party gateway instead, which is straightforward but adds a step to setup and a percentage to each sale.
The second thing to plan for: Shopify bills in US dollars. Your subscription is a dollar amount, so what you pay in rand moves with the exchange rate every month. Budget with a buffer.
Most "Shopify pricing South Africa" pages quote the subscription and stop there. That's the smallest part of what you'll spend. Here's the honest line-item view:
| Cost | What it is | What to budget |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | The monthly subscription, billed in USD. Entry plans suit most small stores; higher tiers mainly buy lower card rates and advanced reporting. | Check current USD pricing — convert at today's rate plus a buffer |
| Payment gateway | A percentage of every sale, charged by PayFast, Peach, Ozow or Yoco. This is the cost that scales with you. | Typically a low single-digit % per transaction |
| Theme | Free themes are genuinely good now. Paid themes are a once-off. A custom build replaces this entirely. | R0 – R6,000 once-off |
| Apps | Reviews, bundles, subscriptions, shipping rules — each usually a monthly USD fee. This is where store costs quietly balloon. | Audit ruthlessly; most stores need 3–5 |
| Domain & email | Your .co.za domain and professional email on it. | ~R250/yr domain · from R249/user/mo email |
| Build | Setup, design, product structure, gateway and courier config, tracking, launch. | DIY, or from R45,000 for a professional build |
Because Shopify Payments isn't available here, this choice matters more than it does elsewhere. The four you'll realistically consider:
Judge them on three things: the percentage per transaction, how fast money settles into your account, and whether they support the payment methods your specific customers use. A gateway that's 0.3% cheaper but settles a week slower can hurt more than it saves.
Shopify handles local shipping well once configured. Most South African stores integrate a courier aggregator or a direct courier account, then set rate rules by weight, cart value or region. Two things worth getting right on day one: free-shipping thresholds (they lift average order value more reliably than discounts) and honest delivery estimates — outlying-area delays cause more bad reviews in South Africa than product problems do.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly platform fee | Yes, in USD | None — but hosting is on you |
| Maintenance | Handled for you | Updates, security, backups — yours |
| Breaks unexpectedly | Rarely | Plugin conflicts are a genuine risk |
| Customisation ceiling | High, within the platform | Effectively unlimited |
| Best for | Selling now, with low overhead | Unusual requirements or existing WordPress |
Our honest take: for most South African small and medium businesses, Shopify is cheaper once your own time is counted. WooCommerce wins when you have genuinely unusual requirements, an existing WordPress operation, or in-house developer capacity. We build both and will tell you plainly which one your business needs.
Shopify's SEO defaults are decent but not neutral — a few structural things decide whether you rank:
If you'd rather not spend six weeks of evenings on it: we build Shopify stores from R45,000 — design, product structure, gateway and courier setup, tracking that actually fires, SEO structure from day one, and a launch checklist that includes testing checkout on a real phone.
